December 2017

This month I finally started my weekly rotation. I have two seed starting trays that I rotate through. Every Saturday I plant enough of everything that we can eat in a week. My trays are 6 cells by 12 cells so I generally plant 6 of everything. Except things like watermelon or cucumbers. I do try to plant a few extra of things since the seeds that I have tend to have a low germination rate. I am hoping that by next year I will not have the same issues that I do now as I should have my own seed to grow from. I went to the Plant-It Hawaii sale in kurtis town during the first week of November and picked up a Vanilla orchid as well as a Kumquat. We also got up "tee-pees" for our climbers though only the birdhouse gourd seems to be enjoying climbing. The wind has been pretty bad lately though that could be effecting everything. I haven't been able to Dipell as much this last month due to illness and rain. We do think that the Japanese rose beetle is responsible for much of our foliage destruction this last few months though. Mom sprinkled something all over the ground to take care of them and it seems to have helped. My Red Mountain Apple seems to be recovering nicely as well.

I have a different kind of jasmine planted in each corner of this square garden. We also planted some plumeria there on the right and two figs straight on in this image as well as on the right. You can kind of see my beautiful sunflowers there blooming in the middle.
Orange Dragon fruit still working on adjusting to its new surroundings.

Yellow dragon fruit seems to be doing the best

Zebra Lima beans we got from a community event. My daughter is tending these and loving how well her plants are doing!

Turmeric, not sure if its dead or just on a break I haven't done any research really but it has never really seemed happy in this location. not sure if it didn't get enough water or too much sun or too much water I'm not sure maybe it will return!

Chayote seems to be recovered from whatever it was that ate it a few months ago!
Cotton plants we got from a community event they seem to be liking this location fairly well.

Red dragon fruit Seems to be doing alright. We have some babies growing in there too that we sprouted from seed. The seeds  sprouted fairly easily.
Zucchini! we have 2 small zucchini in there growing not sure how well they will do but so far so good! it does seem to be taking a bit longer for them to grow than it does on the mainland but shouldn't be too bad.

Birdhouse gourd! this gourd was a complete surprise! one day it was about two inches long the next it was as you see it here huge!

Moon and stars watermelon it hasn't done anything for a while I think we will end up picking it in the net week or so.

Acorn squash just picked our first one we haven't had a chance to try it yet!

Finally potato sprouts! you can't tell here but these are my mulch mounds we'll see how well they grow here!

Raspberry I grew from a seed! The seed took ages to sprout but seems to be doing very very well!

Cucumbers! This time around it seems I will at least get 2 cucumbers per plant!

Raspberries that need more trellising

Berries! they are not formed pretty but still tasty I need to figure out what I'm missing here here to help with the formation of the berries.

Snap peas the package said that they wouldn't need trellising and I was fool enough to believe it! no pods formed yet though not even any flowers.

More raspberries! and more trellising needed!
Eggplant! I've never been able to grow eggplant before but these seem to be very very happy!

Eggplant Close up

Another Close up of the Eggplant
Black Raspberries still not happy after the big rain we had I think I might loose the two on the right the one on the left seems to be alright though.

Lettuce going to seed! Save me from buying seeds next year woohoo!

Banana peppers I'm hoping that they will be able to produce more than one pepper each but so far they don't seem overly motivated.

Onions still going I keep waiting for these leeks to get bigger but they just don't not sure If I should Harvest them or just keep waiting. They might be in my soup here soon!

My Strawberries! I can say that there is nothing I am more happy with than these Strawberry plants they seem to be super producers!

Two of my Quinault Strawberries getting ready to turn red. The Quinaults seem to last longer than the Eversweet though they also take longer to ripen.

Tomatoes one! I will go through here and clean this bed out soon and replant Romas they are better producers!

Tomato bed 2 U of H on the left and Jelly Bean on the Right. I can say that so far I am unhappy with the Jelly bean they just sprawl EVERYWHERE as you can see. So far the U of H have been very consistent they each have three main shafts which are easy enough to string up.

some peppers cabbage and kale

Lettuce and Kale!

Broccoli we will see how well it does out in the run! It never did anything in the shade

Corn! We are still hopeful that we will be able to get at least a few ears of corn off of these!

This weeks plantings. radish kale carrot lettuce and some Walla Walla onions. I Don't think we have enough hours of sunlight for the Walla Wallas but I'm certainly going to give it a try!

My little Herb Garden! Sage is still looking really sad not sure why its growing so slowly I wish it would hurry up! I need some sage sausage!
Asparagus! Still going well it actually seeded this year so next year we should have some tasty shoots

Cabbage radish and carrots delicious!

Bananas still growing!

Ginger all done blooming still growing I'm hoping by next year I will be able to harvest some!

I am amazed at how much better this orchid is doing outside with no care than it was inside with loads of care

another orchid

one of my Jasmine blossoms this one is called "Belle of India"

I love Sunflowers! these are the first ones I've  gotten to bloom!

How I start my plants each row is a certain veggie they stay in the tray for two weeks before I plant them out in the sun

Here is a week old tray next week it will be replanted.

Added this picture to show how we regrow our green onions from the store! so far this has been the best method we have! We have yet to collect enough that we have a constant supply though should be good to go in a few months though!

Cucumber

Living at 1,760 ft in Ocean view HI we're trying to start growing our own everything! One thing we've been trying to grow is Pickling Cucumbers. We managed to get a few off but so far its been one per plant or so which certainly isn't enough to make pickles out of!
